He's had 3 separate roles in Parliament over the last 4 years, all of which he's failed in so has been "reshuffled" into another role. He allowed builders to destroy hundreds of thousands of acres of land and forest in our county before causing the chaos he has in Parliament.

It’s not fair I’ve hardly been in school because of mental health issues so I wasn’t doing well. The school have no idea what I can do though. I had tutors at home and I was doing really well and I actually had hope for once. • On the topic of standardized testing, I'm of the mindset that it's too flawed to accurately portray the potential and intellect of students. I benefited from standardized testing and wore a special tassel on my graduation cap for excelling in the right areas, but it's not the right way to approach education. It can't measure the worth of a student's abilities. The tests I took were mainly multiple choice. The studying required to recognize the right patterns and remember them were stressful and there almost certainly were people in my grade that were under pressure at home to do their best, which is nothing new, but that feeling of pressure and stress is most definitely amplified by standardized testing. I know that there has been data to back up the mental health side of going through that process but standardized testing is also not nuanced enough to recognize when a student that tests badly isn't necessarily under qualified to attend a college that can offer specialized learning. It's common to hear students complain about whether or not we needed those tests, but there were also many teachers that felt that too and sympathized enough to do small things like provide gum or jolly ranchers during testing or even studying. I'm of the belief that the education system is flawed and needs to be reworked and I'd agree that getting rid of those huge tests would be a great start to changing how the system measures the worth of a young student. P.S. Thanks a bunch if you read all that. I hope you're feeling well and that we get through these times ok

  • If standardized testing needs to be a thing, here's how it can be done remotely. My cousin is working towards a nursing degree. They have a program set up where your webcam watches you the whole time you're taking a test to ensure you're not using your books/notes. They could have just done that....

    Melissa KMelissa K3 mánuðum síðan
    • I personally don't think standardized testing worked when I was in school. Especially the time limits when it came to the reading section. I'm a slower reader by default so I'd literally just fill in the bubbles because I KNEW I wouldn't finish. Therefore I was on Academic warning for most of elementary school for it, and put in reading help group. But it also doesnt work because it NOT the same test across the country. Lol I know they've changed the way the tests are now, moving to online and the actual test is different.... things need to change further if standardized testing is to stay, though.

  • Standardized testing is counterproductive to learning. Throughout my schooling years, there has always been such an emphasis on standardized testing. So much so that actually learning and retaining information has taken a backseat to test scores. The message is that test scores matter more than preparing students for the next step in education. And teachers wonder why they have a class full of high testing students who don't understand the basics of their subjects.

Why are you putting students futures on a moms spagetti moment when you have 12 years of work to look at, a million extra curricular, family life, not to mention their entrance interviews. Not to mention you can just flunk them out, if they aren't qualified they will fail on their own.

  • I think SAT and ACT should stay. Where I graduated from, it didn't matter if you learned the material. Tests were completely open book and 80% of your grade was purely 'did you do your homework?' Not even if you had the right answers, with classwork and tests coming out around 5% and group projects around 15%. Basically, my schools ran institutions of follow my orders, don't learn. While the ACT and SAT may need additional things implemented to properly test someone better, or be updated, I don't think it should be done away with completely, especially with no proposed replacement. You don't do away with a system before you have something that will take it over.

    Michelle StillwaterMichelle Stillwater3 mánuðum síðan
    • Michelle Stillwater Yep. They’re called standardized tests for a reason. It gives a fair assessment to all, so all can be judged fairly. I went to the University of California college in 2000 and there were students who came from schools that gave out grades, we’re middle of the road, and you earned your grade only on tests. This helps even out all the unfair/different grading systems.

But also, I think the ACT and SAT are actually great levelers. I fucking suck at doing HW in high school because it's not engaging. However, with tests, I kill it every time because it's not just practice. So if you kick out the tests, you only get the ones high in the conscientiousness from the Big 5 Personality Test (the only real one). You don't get innovators, or lazy ADHD wackjobs like me. So those tests were very helpful for me because they showed my potential more clearly. But I know for some of my friends they were not helpful. I'm good at long, intense, intellectual tasks like tests and trivia. But I know some lose stamina at hour two, which wouldn't be an issue at university. So it's unfair for them to be penalized for it.

I'm an intelligent woman, but I know the SATs would not have reflected that. In fact, I went to a community college just so I could skip the SATs even though I got mostly all As in my classes. • We test far too much in the UK now. Kids can't just be kids now; They have to be drilled for a tests basically from the start of their academic career. It's nonsense. Children do have adult brains until they are around 22! Try making a 5 year old comprehend that they need to be ideally thinking of their future! Why should they? Kids need to be allowed to have that child stage to be balanced adults. All they should teach sub 12 olds is maths, English, the fun side of science (don't have to get mega deep) but mostly encouraging creativity (music, art etc etc). Creativity, fun and building self esteem/self worth is really missing from schools in the UK. Teaching in the UK is just one long comprehension/memory test after another. Children have to stay in some form of education until your 18 in the UK now and we still have kids that cant read/write/argue their views/low self-esteem etc. Our eductaion system only works for the kids that basically don't need the system in the first place (or have money for private tutors/school). We have this one subject in the UK called general studies. Its involves general discussions etc. There isnt really a set thing to learn in the lsssons or for the exams (it basically the only exam of its kind to my knowledge). Its all about you being able to discuss any subject, to get your point across, see an argument from both sides (and being able to argue both sides) and use general knowledge to supplement your views etc etc. Its basically about being articulate in your thoughts/reasoning/views in life. Everyone thinks its a joke lesson but you still have to take it to some level. Honestly the amount of people you fail it or get their worst marks in it is phenomenal. Even the 'smart' children who are getting As in all other subjects. Its shows that there is a real issue with children and articulation/forming coherent argument/counter arguments/seeing arguments from the other side etc. Its not the main or only reason the uk is getting the way it is, but if children are taught how to articulate an argument properly or empathy towards different views at school (whilst still questioning the reasoning behind other peoples views) we wouldn't have the type of unconstructive social commerce we have now. (I'm saying this as a person that went to private school snd University in the UK).

For example, the same people who said you don't need firearms because you have the police, are the same ones pushing to defund the police AND on top of that hire personal police force to defend their homes (Lauri litefoot, mayor of Chicago) is a good example. The same one destroying their own cities and siphoning money from their tax payers for their own campaign while putting first responders out of work because of lacks of fund, just look up whats happening in NY thanks to Cuomo and Belasio, on top of that causing the most wealthy to leave which were about 50% of the contributors in taxes... but you know what pisses me off the most? And I'm not even from the US, is seeing people leaving blue states after they are turned to shit and bringing the same mind set that destroyed their cities/state into red cities/state. Im arabic and my family moved to Canada for a better life, accepting the countries values and ideas and i see the same thing happening here... people coming from trash countries and wanting to establish the same rules and lifestyle here. Much of the blame for the pandemic is on the governors not the president since state’s primarily took charge on an individual basis. Because this virus is something the world has never seen before. You make the best decisions you can at the time with the data available and hope for the best. No leader has a crystal ball. Their best is all you can ask from a guy... While I dont fault leaders for doing their best, I do believe the democratic party is the biggest virus that the U.S. has ever faced. Here's an example of admission requirements for a Bachelor Arts program majoring in psychology at the University of Alberta: How is this not the standard for students to just get accepted in the USA or UK?

  • If I was a student I’d protest too. Many of those kids worked hard to get into those school and shouldn’t be punished bc they didn’t go to a private school in a rich area

  • I think standardized testing like the SATs are dumb.In Canada, we do have standardized testing but it is used to determine whether the school is following the curriculum appropriately And is not Used for testing admission to higher education. Our higher education systems use your GPA from high school for admissibility into higher education as well as your average on certain courses that are pre-requisite for the program you’re looking at entering

  • In regards to standardized testing, I think it shouldn’t have such a large impact on where you’re able to go for school. I am a terrible test taker, I get anxious and overthink things. I scored low o n both my SAT and ACT, but I’m currently a senior and a state university, soon completing my bachelors in chemistry. My high school counselor told me I shouldn’t even go to college because of my scores. Standardized testing does not define who you are and what your potential is.

  • I personally think the whole situation was ridiculous with making up exam results. They should have just used mock exam results for the entrance requirements for universities (which is how students get their provisional offers in the first place). They could also have said that those children who wished to take their final exams in the hope they would improve on mock exam results could do so if they went into quarantine for two weeks and then sat the tests in socially distanced rooms, wearing face masks, sterilising hands on entry, etc. I don't understand at all the way this was handled, it makes the results entirely meaningless.

  • Hey Phil just an FYI on the UK A levels it seemed like you were suggesting that it was a standardised test which is slightly Incorrect. The A levels are three grades from subjects that were chosen to be studied by the student so an example would be two sciences and math for a student wanting to pursue science or a similar path at uni, likewise the A level can be English politics and geography or a range of other subjects they are not standard across all students at all. We also have Btecs which are for students that don't like exams and prefer being judged on practical skills to get into uni.

  • How, in supposedly to most democratic country in the world, are people standing in line all night to vote? And some never get the chance. I've voted in around 5 or 6 elections in the UK and every time I was in and out in minutes. Why can the mighty United States not manage that?

  • The U.K. school scandal issue isn’t that students in lower income areas are more likely to have theirs reduced, it was all over; private and public. At the end of the day, if those students teachers estimated their grades, those are the grades they should have been given. PERIOD. Absolutely disgusting.

  • SAT/ACT are ridiculously stilted in favor of advantaged students :P the more students can pay (tutors, prep classes, prep books, retaking the exams), the more they are rewarded by the system via super scoring and other such BS. Let’s just get rid of the dumb, expensive things...
