    • I am really on the side of this is just a "woke checklist". Sure it might help with diversity but it screws over small studios as well as general movie quality, which just hurts films that are progress and written well like say black panther, and excludes movies that are all white but still great pieces of art. If the Oscars really wanted to do something about this, they would drop this crap and use all the money they have to fix the hiring process of the industry and the ability to get said education to be hired, attack the porblem at its source not apply a Band-Aid laced with poison. Also address all the rampant sexual assult in the industry, cuz yeah, thats a thing.

Doing nothing with just perpetuate this state and keep silencing voices.

But that dosn't mean someone who is abled cant be cast as somene with a disability. The whole point of being an actor is your stepping into someone else's story and if you can really potray that authentically, whats the problem? So I guess it takes common sense to cast people.

If you are applying for a law degree class, they look at your qualifications and then make the determination if you in or if you are denied. HOWEVER, just a couple weeks ago, new rule. If you are black and you get denied, you get to go to an all black staff for a second interview that DOES NOT have anything to do with your ability, but only your color and they will let you in if you can convince them. Imagine that, institutional systemic racism against all other colors. Sickening.

  • Funny term "woke quota", how it has a pre-loaded negative sense built in, requiring you to shake off the baggage of each word before you can consider the issue rationally. I imagine someone in the field of branding who hated the idea is behind this term. Manipulative terminology aside, I think encouraging diversity in business is laudable, and encouraging visibility of under represented or badly represented sectors of society is a powerful way to help bring about real, lasting change in public attitudes, doing substantive, durable benefit to our culture, helping us work toward a day when such considerations will seem silly and the scourge of bigotry can be put to bed for good. I really don't think it's impossible to imagine and to work toward this vision, and the task of correcting for issues of unfair cultural bias that hurts all of us more than we can possibly understand is important work that is bound to seem, at times, oddly misplaced. Those who falsely imagine that they aren't personally impacted by the cultural toxicity of bigotry will take the bait and raise their voices with accusations of hypocrisy, charging such efforts with perpetrating the very social ills they purport to oppose. It's an unavoidable reaction, and it makes perfect sense that those privileged with lives where the menace of bigotry isn't keenly felt might be confident enough, given little thought, to describe such measures as being plainly guilty of "reverse racism" -- or, just "racism", and it's a hot enough button backed by enough of a kernel of truth -- misunderstood and failing in context as it certainly is -- that it's a waste to try to shed light on how the claim is faulty and irrelevant. Methods of this sort that apply artificial pressures as curative measures do work well, and this bottom line really is all that matters, no matter the controversies that they may trigger or the efforts spent by passionate dissenters on the project of convincing others that they don't work, facts be damned. The kinds of opinions that won't suffer the clear challenge of facts are the kinds of opinions that we all know by now are best left unrattled. Privilege entails a measure of blindness that is the natural result of not knowing what one simply doesn't know, and none of us can claim to be above this. Attach this to terms that seem to suggest a moral failing, and it's no wonder that pride kicks in and engages a style of self defense that eschews any chance of evolved understanding. I will say that this particular model of applying pressure -- disqualifying a work that fails to meet certain standards of excellence that I would think of as unrelated to the standards the academy purports to showcase -- it seemed to me, at first, to weaken the integrity of the mission. Wouldn't it be conceivable, after all, for a film to represent the very best in quality while failing to administer their staff responsibly? You'd think that there would be countless other ways that wouldn't call into question the integrity of the term "best picture". As a movie lover who also gets a kick out of the Hollywood pomp, I actually would like achievements in cinematic arts to be recognized. And then I remembered that these are the Oscar's, whose importance in the game of appraising cinema is a ship that's left the harbor and sailed away long ago. Any earthshattering milestones in cinema that escape the academy's notice because of this administrative oddity would be such a rarity and would still be hailed by more reputable channels, so if there's an asterisk following "best picture", it really shouldn't be as much a theoretical detriment to the project of celebrating film as it would be a benefit to the culture overall. So I find myself falling in the "doesn't go far enough" camp.

Yes, there are horrible, racist, misogynistic, and homophobic people out there, but why is the solution always to punish people for being white or straight or male? It does nothing to help race relations. It does nothing to help the wage gap. It does nothing whatsoever. All it does is give someone a participation trophy simply for being a certain race, gender, etc. Not only that, it further emboldens the racists, misogynists and homophobes. There has to be a better way for talented people of minority groups to get their opportunity.

I agree with one comment that he shared, it's not about forcing people to add in diversity, it's about recognizing the amazing films out there that already have diversity. However, that checklist is so weak and does nothing. Its the Oscars response to the inclusion issue without actually doing anything.

  • I’m late, but... What?! I was kind of expecting this quota to be about maybe requiring there be a few more diverse or minority-starring movies to be considered for nomination or something. Which I’m fine with it if it means that possible hidden gems that or actors who would be otherwise looked over might be given attention, if the judges indeed have a racial bias. But a movie NEEDS to fill a quota to even qualify?! Seriously?! This is how you get tokenism, people. You can’t obligate people to do things like that. Some movies completely make sense with just a certain type of casting. Like, I expect the denizens of Wakanda to be all black. Because Wakanda should be black. If you put a white or Asian person in there for no reason other than some quota, I’m calling BS. Likewise, if a movie is set in a place where pretty much everyone would be white, I’m expecting that too, and there might not be enough white LGBT or disabled actors open or even skilled enough yet at the time. Fortunately this doesn’t actually affected anything, because women are still included, because actresses are in everything. But it really does hurt some people who don’t have access to big pools of actors.

  • The problem is with "woke" quotas (a.k.a. affirmative action) is that the smaller guy who can't meet the quotas is disqualified. What's more, it seems that once these implementations are put into place, quality goes down as people stop trying. An odd coincidence - the number of marginalized people seems to go down when quotas are implemented. Maybe because the "victory" is a bit hollow? Or maybe it seems that you no longer have to try to get in. Conversely - how do you stop active racism? It's not uncommon for someone to look over a black or Hispanic person for a part. Hollywood is notorious for "whitewashing" ethnic characters. I don't think quotas are the answer, but I don't know what the solution is either.

Men dont like what women create in the movie industry, which is fine because its not meant for us. However, there is a group of women that dont care so they wont get the same number of votes either. White men make movies that go across all demographics without pushing agendas. Thats why they usually win. Its not racism. Its just numbers. If women and POC made movies that werent so focused on their demographic, it would be more widely accepted.

  • In regards to the Oscars story; just because a studio or team meets these quotas, what’s not to say they (the Oscars) won’t pick the same types of movies they’ve picked for years that don’t support and show the talent, struggles, and stories of majorly underrepresented groups such as people of color, women, LGBTQA+ people? Just because a studio or team meet some quota in regards to *their* ‘diversity’ doesn’t mean that the movies that will ultimately win and get the ‘recognition of the Oscars’ will be any more progressive. That’s what we should be focusing on rather than ensuring the ‘teams’ making the content are more diverse. And that’s not to say having a diverse team making the content won’t help what ends up being created. It’ll provide some more diverse content, and thus eventually they’ll HAVE to pick something more progressive, diverse, and different because that’ll be the only options to pick from - which I don’t think is the goal for many who have issues with the Oscars and the representation there. Make the judges behind the Oscars more diverse so that the same stupid movies don’t constantly win because they hit all the right nostalgia/feel-good spots. Don’t just focus on all the money, gifts, (*cough* bribes *cough*), etc. thrown at you to make that decision for you. Focus on what the content actually is and the talent behind it. Period.

  • The problem with quotas is then you're hiring people not based on skill/merit, you're only hiring them to check a box, which means there's going to be some people hired who aren't the best person for the job & people left out who are. It's also problematic cuz they aren't diversifying cuz it's the right thing to do, they're diversifying cuz they don't want to get "cancelled"

  • I think whats more horrifying about this video than the fact of all the voter insanity in a critical election. Is the entire front page of comments on here is talking about the Oscars which admittedly none of us care about instead of the scary AF election issues in Georgia. Imagine if this is nation wide on election day.

  • It doesn't make any sense to put a "woke quotas" checklist like this on movies. Like one of the tweets said, we want the Oscars to recognize the great movies made by women and PoC that already exist. We don't want studios to put stereotypes of underrepresented groups in every movie simply to meet a quota. There's nothing meaningful in that.
