As someone who lives in Africa and has seen the direct impact of legislation such as this it will prove catastrophic to many wildlife areas within Africa that have seen massive population growth in the "iconic species" under the consumptive use conservation model while the inverse can be said for other African countries that have taken the route of non-consumptive tourism

    • Phil, please read this! There is a man, Michael Griffin, who drove around police barricades at a protest in Fargo. He rode into the protest and hit a protester, accelerated, and rode with him on the roof of his car for 3 blocks while others dodged. He was taken into custody initially, but no charges are being pressed as the police claim they cannot prove intent. There's only one, three paragraph article, and us who were present to testify. I'm not sure if this is even the right place to write about this. But this man tried to kill people, but is probably enjoying a beer on his porch right now.

  • That’s actually a good point. I know a lot of people who supported the BLM protests, but when you frame it against the Reopen Protest they thought those people should be forced home or given fines. But then that’s hypocritical because in the end your opinion of interference is based on the political motivation of their protest, and not on their right to said displays of protest I for one understand the sentiment for why people went out for either of the protests; but Im of the opinion that a virus doesn’t have any regard to the why, it does as its nature intends it and it is not a good time for such things regardless of cause, ideology, or motivation

The reopening protests showed how selfish people are to risk their immunocompromised family members lives JUST to get their hair done....while BLM is protesting against police brutality, systemic racism, and so much more. BLM protesters are thugs and looters, while reopening protesters are “fine people”......UGH. So infuriating. I can go on and on. But that’s what I think the differences are

The cabal made a system that is working exactly how it was designed to. We've tolerated it far too long. But humans of planet Earth are waking up to the truth. Everything that is being thrown at us now (Trump, corona virus etc) are desperate last resorts to shock scare and distract us, but they wont win. • So, about the protests.. There's definitely results from Memorial Day contributing to spikes, but the BLM protests are still playing a big role. COVID-19 actually only takes about 5-6 days on average to incubate, and can extend up to 14 days in SOME cases. The quarantine protests, BLM protests, Memorial Day parties, and opening states back up are all contributing to the re-surge of COVID-19. The CDC is expecting this surge to continue on in the next couple weeks unless something is done.

  • Trump is being criticized for using the military to suppress anarchist rioters and looters. Yet the liberally elected cities like Minneapolis abandon their police buildings and let their cities be burned to the ground. Only to be paid for by the hard working tax payer. Who is truly to blame? Rule of law should always be preserved, no matter what. No elderly person deserves to be beaten within an inch of their life just because of their race. No family business that had NOTHING to do with George Floyd deserves to be ransacked and burned. That is not social progress, that is exploiting a tragedy for personal gain at the expense of the working class.

  • I'm fairly creative, and tend to get lost in stories I write in my head. when trump was elected. I had this crazy, insane daydream where trump would order the military into a immoral situation, and his generals would just flat out refuse him. That, at the time, felt insane, and I told myself it would never happen in real life, because it's actually a really big deal to refuse orders. It, uh, doesnt seem so far fetched now.

  • The need to protest racism across the world is so necessary. It absolutely outways the need to quarantine. This pandemic will absolutely end but what about racism? It is so heavily ingrained in some people that no matter how much we protest, it may take several generations for racism to end in their family. As a black woman who is dating a black man, I have to worry about his safety every day and the safety of our future kids. The protest to open up nail salons and spas is nowhere near as necessary as the BLM protest. If how their protest was received by governments does not prove white privilege then I don't know what will.

You take a drink of water, you risk your life. Nowadays you breath and you risk your life. Every moment now, you don't have a choice. The only thing you can choose is what you're risking it for.

  • Everyone panicked about COVID when we didn't know much. We know it has about a 0.6% mortality rate. We all have to get it. Just let it roll through the healthy population. But no. You can't scream COVID is the grim reaper, then go be 100% pro protest. That's called hypocrisy. To "structural racism" : It's the rich vs the poor. The rich want AS MUCH OF THE GENERAL POPULATION POOR AS POSSIBLE. I don't think they care about your skin. They want us to think it's about each others' skin, because that diverts our attention on who to pressure to affect change. So long as we're convinced to focus on anything else than about how society is set up (0.1% vs 99.9%), they keep the status quo. Divided we are weak. United we are strong.

  • I can't wait to see these MAGA cultists turn on Mattis. Can we stop pretending these people care about our troops? Trumpists are fascists, plain and simple. They care about power for power's sake and that has no border, race, or nationality. Make no mistake, there's a reason social scientists have been so hesitant to call Trump a racist. He's something worse: a fascist. The fascists that stay in power aren't *just* racist in their policies, but they use the distrust of the "others" in our society to gain and consolidate power just so they can have it. There's no endgame and no goal, they just want the power. Trump is a malignant narcissist. That's not just my opinion, that's the opinion of some of the most storied, credible, and respected medical professionals in the U.S. when they wrote "Duty to Warn" after he became president. Of course he wants power. If you're a "Bernie or Buster" who "can't vote for someone who committed a rape" (Biden allegedly) remember that allowing Trump to retain power means when you had the choice between someone with 1 rape accusation and one with 40, you allowed the one with 40 to get in power. Because Trump has over 40 sexual assault and rape allegations including a credible rape accusation from his ex-wife.

  • Regarding protests and social distancing and Covid. I've been in NYC this whole time and for most of March, all of April, and most of May, I left my apartment building maybe six times. The virus rendered me unemployed and I was vigilant about not being a part of spreading the virus. However, now I have been out protesting for over a week and, yes, I think it's worth it. In all the protests I've been to, you are hard pressed to find someone not wearing a mask. And for those who aren't, there are amazing people who are handing out things like masks, a squirt of hand sanitizer, food, drinks, and sunscreen. And there is some effort to social distance. Obviously, much of the time it doesn't happen, but we're all aware and try not to touch each other. As for the shouting, we have the masks, but also, no one's really facing each other. When we're chanting, we're all facing the same way, not spreading particles in each others' faces. From what I hear, talking directly face to face with someone is the best way to spread the virus while outside, and that's just not happening. I really think that the risk is low. Plus, it's mostly young people and everyone's taking their health into account when making the decision to protest. I can't tell, obviously, but I'm sure higher risk people are staying home more than going out. Honestly, far worse in NYC is all the people hanging out outside of bars in the evening. It's pride month and we have bars open in the evening for people to get takeout drinks but they just loiter on the sidewalks, not wearing masks because they're drinking, chatting loudly in each others' faces, and crammed together on the sidewalk. If there's a spike in NYC, I'd look to that kind of behavior more than the protests.

Something that the president hasn't condemned and has only called for more action against protestors. Who is to say sending in the military won't result in the same thing? More violence which leads to more rioting in retaliation. The actions they are taking are resulting in the exact thing they want stopped.

Many of us have been harping on about vitamin D for months, and now that the data is becoming so overly abundant, it's sad how people even such as yourself are still ignoring it, when discussing it could easily be saving lives. At the same time, you're pushing a social narrative that becomes harder to rationalize when the reasons you listed are not true in other parts of the word. Blacks are more affected by COVID-19 all throughout Europe (or in fact anywhere they live), while much of (if not all) Europe has universal access to health care. High blood pressure is also not a universal characteristic of being black, and will change culture to culture. What won't change is the skin pigment, and the fact that darker pigment causes less vitamin D to be produced by the body, which has directly been shown to be a major player in not only the immune system, but COVID-19.

  • Even though I think the people who were protesting the shutdowns specifically the ones who wanted to get hair cuts and go out to dinner were stupid af (even though yes they have the right to do so) You don't need to "go out" to live. I think the protesting happening now is important and needs to occur. I think if we're out here and doing our best to keep safe for those around us and ourselves at the end of the day this is going to make a difference in the long run. I believe that the way both protests were handled by police and covered by the media itself shows the racisim and bias we have in this country.

  • Do people understand what an "op-ed" is? It's not the papers opinion it's literally an opinion peace. NYT is super left-leaning, good for them to finally allow a simple op-ed that doesnt strictly tow the party line. In other news, I want to know what you guys think, does PhillyD seem more and more left-leaning these days? I was pretty disappointed in Phill for not covering any of the officers who died from the rioters. And lets be real, there's no way he didn't hear about the stories. Sad to see someone like Phill subtlely push his agenda and omit very important events within these recent stories.
