  • While I wish very much that none of this had been going on in the first place and no one had been subjected to this disenfranchisement and discrimination, I think there is some good to be gleaned here in how a lot of the people involved responded to the situation. The frank way the BIPOC current and former staff members laid out their experiences, the solidarity from a lot of the current staff, the fact that Rappaport is no longer the editor, even the fact that the letter of resignation actually acknowledged his failings and culpability. Whether that apology was genuine and whether that serves anything to the actual folks he impacted with his practices, I obviously do not know, but I still do think it matters that people in charge make a show of taking responsibility for their own failures because it's increasingly common that that does not happen and I think that that is very toxic. I hope the staff involved gets the recognition and pay they deserve moving forward whether they remain with BA or not. I hope that the behind the scenes of this mess wasn't any worse than what we saw for those involved, either. I hope people take this as an example of just how easily workers, especially from marginalized groups, can be put in bad situations, and that we all try and make sure it's not happening under our own noses, as well.

  • Bon Appetit's problems were predictable. They started pandering by bringing in chefs-of-color who had little in the way of personality and seemed to rely purely on their ethnicity to justify their lack of engagement. No one cares what color a chef is, but if you're going to be on video, be interesting at the very least.

  • To be fair from a purely marketing position, the whole readers will find those recipes too “tricky,” is probably a valid point. I know EVERYONE watches the test kitchen but the actual publication (it just occurred that there’s probably millions who did not know it was a magazine before this all happened) still has a largely Caucasian readership. Where I live people can easily find dang near any ingredient they could want. They can whip up an international feast any day of the week if they so choose. But there are still a ton places in the western world where the population is mainly Caucasian and as such the markets don’t carry a large variety of “ethnic,” ingredients. I grew up and live in a diverse area but lived in Maine for a few years. There were some things I just couldn’t cook unless I’d recently taken a trip to NY. Boston worked for a few items but it was all the way NY for a lot of it. In some cases it is not impossible that a reader might want to try a recipe but will give up before they start because they can’t easily access the ingredients called for. Heck in some cases they may have never even heard of them. Sadly that does intimidate people. Editors know this and will chuck an idea if they think it’s not going to appeal to the reader. But it’s an international publication right? Yes but the articles are not universal. Meaning if an article or even an issue doesn’t suit a country/continent it doesn’t get included in that version of the publication. For example, the thanksgiving issue will not get published outside countries where it makes since. So to some extent publications do attempt to cater to their readership (make no mistake not for altruistic reasons but financial). But this drama is happening in the US because of course. The country is still mostly white and readers of BA are mostly white so, yeah. This is what happens. “The readers are mainly white, let’s cater to them, let’s make money.” What’s odd though, is they have better sales in diverse areas of the country. Places where people are likely and able (due to access) to try out more exotic fare. So what’s up with that that? Seems a lost opportunity. Oh yeah Condé Nast sucks. Everything they touch turns to poo. They are the Walmart periodicals.

I figured you were speaking on the situation discussed in this video which talks about the unfair treatment of certain employees of a company. It was good of Bon Appetit to have different types of professionals with different backgrounds, but they should be paying their employees their worth. As I have said, chefs from different cultures do in fact bring diversity of thought in the context of culinary art.

Everyone is not equal in every possible way....In reality, if you break it down fine enough, nothing is equal in ANY way. The concept of "fair" is a myth we are taught in kindergarten, it's not real.

Its really dumb, because 10 or 20 years from now someone will decide to be offended by something you said or a photo you took and you will loose your job, be blacklisted and shoved into a corner never to be allowed out again.... even though half these MF's did the same or worse 20 years ago lol. I honestly just don't think its worth sharing your entire life!!!! Its only going to cause you issues, just my opinion lol. Everything is offensive, racist, reappropriating, and completely unacceptable anymore...

Just Out Here TinkeringJust Out Here Tinkering3 mánuðum síðan
    • @Jackie Guo ok sure, I get it. Don't say racist shit... but its not as simple as that. Something that was acceptable 20 years ago no longer is today. Things I don't find offensive others do. When I was a kid my parents dressed me as an "Indian Chief" for Halloween. Was a super cool costume back then, but now adays thats racist or reappropriating when in all actuality people thought it looked really cool and wanted to emulate it through what used to be called the highest form of flattery. And if you want to change your mind and say thats not cool anymore, fine. But all these people getting fired and resigning and losing their livelihood over something they did 20 years ago??? I just think its a bit extreme. There is a bit more to this story than just that so maybe not the perfect example here with this guy, but you know what I'm saying right? I dont think I'm crazy!

Just Out Here TinkeringJust Out Here Tinkering3 mánuðum síðan
    • Idk bro maybe people shouldn't be dumb and post something racist, offensive, or anything that can be offensive to a group of people. It's not hard to think or be a decent human being to take a few seconds and think "would this offend anyone?" or "is this racist" like you're making this seem like the world has gone crazy when in reality, society as a whole has become more aware of racism and microaggressions. TL;DR don't be racist and be a decent human being like its not that hard jfc

    • @Karunesh Tongbram the thing here is that Claire and Brad's videos do a lot better than any video Priya, Solha or Rick ever did. And while they might not be compensated "equally" you have no way of knowing that they haven't been compensated at all. People like to blow things out of proportion and of course someone who is seen as the victim is gonna try and milk that in their favour all they can. Please always consider there are two sides to every story. If we believe someone they are underpaid just because they say so, then we should believe it when the person they're accusing comes back and says that these people are not in fact underpaid.

Wasn't (and isn't) a crime, especially 16 years ago when the culture wasn't nearly as obsessed with race as it is now. Different salaries to different people isn't something new or out of the ordinary, it's a well known practice because not everyone are the same and in places like this it really depends on the amount of traction they get from views. She's relatively new to the channel, and in my opinion was on her way to get more prominent role, you need to negotiate with the employer on your wage when the time comes, especially since the business is for profit. Oh well, that explains a lot...

  • I agree that people should be paid for what they are hired for. I understand that Sohla has experience and is working under people that have less experience, but, she was hired for that position. The other people were hired fo their positions before Sohla joined the company. Does she expect that because BA had an opening for an assistant editor, that she applied for and was hired for that position, others should be bumped down from their positions because she has more experience? The assistant editor position was open. She accepted a position as an assistant editor. Yes, less experienced people have already been hired and were in editor positions. She was hired as their assistant. They happen to be mostly white. The American population is mostly white. It happened before she was hired.

  • COME ON, are you fucking serious? I loved this channel, the chefs making these claims against it have been the focus of few videos and the most likely reason is because THEY'RE FUCKING AWKWARD IN FRONT OF THE CAMERA. I cannot tell you how many BA videos I've watched, daily. This is fucking ridiculous. Why does Brad Leone get so many videos? Because his bumblefuckery is enjoyable to watch (sorry Brad). It's sad that the other chefs jump on board just because of this stupid ass backwards "BLM" movement. I'm going to find an alien and fuck it in the ass until it bleeds so the media can find something new to be outraged about. You retards cant truly believe this shit, I hope?

    • I should point out that Ben & Brent aren't putting out any vids now because of Covid, not because of the isolation but because their core business of butchery has turned into a fulltime seven days a week business due to meat shortages at markets!

  • This american fetish for finding someone's really old social media stuff that is vaguely racist, sexist or inappropriate in some way is just sad. Putting on "tan in a bottle" isn't brownface, and the need to hurt/shame people who have done something years ago that's un-PC is disgusting, (online shaming causes suicides and anyone taking part in the shaming should feel responsible)
