It made me feel beautiful by posting, and I know it helped at least one of my friends shake off some bad thoughts she was having about herself when I tagged her.

That's 1460 women who have been killed to femicide. That's just excluding all the thousands of other forms of domestic violence. WAKE UP MURICA

  • Seeing a movement turn into something shameful is always so depressing. To see it get back on track feels so good. I am so damn happy to see this selfie movement become about giving a vocie to women that can't speak up anymore. I love that it's become a positive thing. It very much makes me think of Black Lives Matter, who began with good intentions before becoming the group everyone knew as the racist against whites one. After George Floyd, BLM became the slogan of people against racism once more, and I LOVE just how much the BLM group at the time must have HATED seeing the group fill up with white skinned anti-racists. To join this "blacks only club" and make it into something respectable again. I love that. I love seeing... Not "redemption" but, things getting better, you know. In people, places, things, and movements. It makes me think that we are morally improving afterall. There is something to hope for. We can move beyond racism and selfies... Which are not equally bad, but you know, they're not good. I am glad things are being progressive right now. And that there is more being done to help the women further east. As they need help more than anyone else. Sexism wont be over just because it ends in the west. It has to end everywhere.

When these fuckwits use these court hearings as an opportunity to ask a CEO shit generally reserved for actual customer service reps because they dont understand how to properly use their phones we have a big problem.

  • Idk, I think there's nothing actually wrong with this challenge. It's not as if it's sending bad messages and it's not like there aren't worse challenges out there. So, the backlash seems kind of nitpicky/petty. Personally, I don't find it a problem. I kind of see it as a reminder that women are still being outwardly supportive of each other. Could they do it better? Yeah. But it, as it is, shouldn't be an issue either. It's also not like these people aren't using their resources in other avenues to help women either. Am glad it evolved to open discussion on what's going on in Turkey too, which makes the challenge an upgrade, so kudos.

Like really??? This is why I dont participate. A picture of you wont fix anything. I support Turkey and their decision to start such a trend. Ide rather read something useful and informative to this issue from many women rather than see a pic of you in black and white when I seen your pic many times in color. The next day is like nothing for them, they forget the reason and the bigger picture. I find it quite annoying.

To me it seemed like Facebook‘a relevancy dropped when it added stories. Every time it tries to grow by copying another app I feel like it cheapens itself. Tik tok videos get posted on insta anyways so it’s not like people stop using Instagram because they prefer using TikTok... it’s just a different experience!

  • I see a lot of my fellow Turkish sisters posting in the comment thread and I wanted to add on to the discussion as a Turkish-American woman myself. I recently finished my degree in international affairs and as a result, I have followed the issue of femicide in Turkey for years and the rates have only gotten worse. In 2013, 237 women were murdered by their male relatives or partners in Turkey and by 2018, that number had risen to 477. As you stated Phil, the numbers in 2019 were the worst in a decade. Personally, I don’t mind people sharing the black-and-white photo challenge but I have also seen many people who shared it without knowing its connections to Turkey now start talking about the issue of femicide because of it. I am sure many Turkish women can relate to this sentiment, but I feel like I have been screaming about this issue for years and I am filled with a sense of hope now that more of the world is actually hearing these stories. I encourage everyone to look up the stories of these women and learn about the fear Turkish women live with. Pinar Gültekin (the woman discussed in the video) was murdered by her ex-boyfriend just this past month of July 2020. Özgecan Aslan was only 20 years old in 2015 - she was taking a bus home when the bus driver attempted to rape her and murdered her. Ceren Özdemir was walking home from a ballet class when a man followed her and stabbed her numerous times. Sule Cet was raped by two men and thrown out of a window, after which the men claimed she had committed suicide. Their defense attorneys even tried to argue that the rape was “consensual sex” because she had been drinking alone with men. These are just a tiny tiny tiny percentage of the stories Turkish women wake up to almost every day. This has been our reality for years and I can only hope that this new attention this cause has gotten will actually bring change because Turkish women - and all women - deserve to live free from this kind of violence.

Some friends and family used it just to post a filtered selfie, others went more natural and thought it was about authentic beauty, and others still thought it was to capture ones "happy place"? Idk, but it would be nice if the trend actually had a backing like the Turkish femicide.

  • don't really know exactly why but the word femicide rubs me the wrong way. I assume it is specifically to highlight woman getting murdered for simply being female but how does that get decided? do they just count any death of a female by a males hand? or are there specifications? it feels as if woman getting murdered is somehow MORE of an issue than men getting murdered. as if men's lives are worth less? i looked up some statistics and the homicide % male to female is literally 80 percent male and 20 female (these are stats from 2013 tho so big grain of salt) i'm looking into some more articles tho, will post below . but again I guess men's lives are worth less. You COULD however say that it is more of an issue because woman getting murdered for simply being woman is what makes it so bad which is a fair point, just seems kinda sad nobody cares that u die when that death isn't DIRECTLY linked to your gender. (even tho with such high difference in most countries it clearly is linked just not in a straightforward way)
