    • As a cinephile interested in film in all its eras i have some trepidation. Are movies like song of the south, gone with the wind, and birth of a nation are cinematically historic, but they are also about the stories that are relevant to the fight and history of an entire chunk of a country who wanted to rule over men and women because of false science and the unfortunate truth that money=power=corruption

  • If you want to watch something that accurately depicts slavery then go watch Roots or Birth of a Nation. Gone with the Wind is a movie that depicts a time when slavery still existed but slavery was not the focus, nobody is flipping out about all of the Looney Tunes episodes that joke about black face and have harmful stereotypes of black people including "Mammies". Not to mention the WWII era of cartoons.

There are so many false stories going around by major news outlets, saying that the protests are a response to the rules implemented due to Coronavirus when in reality they are a direct response to the dictatorship the new president is trying to implement. The police brutality is escalating with each new day, so please just share what's happening because nobody is giving it the time of day... All we're asking is for people to have the same energy for this, as they had and keep on having for the BLM movement in America. And for anyone that sees this and wants to help, here's a link to a petition you can sign (but please also do your research and spread the word on what's happening, sadly there isn't much else we can do at the moment): @t

  • Hattie McDaniel was the first black actor to win an Oscar, HOWEVER they had to call the place where the ceremony was ahead of time to make sure it was okay for her to come. Once there, she was not allowed to sit with her fellow actors from the movie, but was seated at a table in the back of the room. She deserved so much more, but her grace and kind spirit shined when accepting the award. We are lucky to have such a wonderful person be a part of our history..I hope they add her story to Gone With the Wind if, and/or when, the put the movie back up.

  • Let's be honest, movies about slavery ALWAYS get the actors and actresses nominations and wins. It is the appalling fact that it allows people to romanticize slavery and believe that people actually liked to being relegated to servitude. It never shows the incessant rape, destruction of families, or the constant dehumanization. It also never shows the structure of government that allows these atrocities to continue to oppress for hundreds of years later.

  • How many minority groups in china are claiming Chinese supremacy? Its ridiculous, if black people want proper representation, then they should be in about 13% of any industry. Why not just go with the most qualified, and if someone wants to be represented in any given industry, become the most qualified and enter the industry. This need to fill quotas or to hire one race over another or force representation of a specific race over another is racist, and a slap in the face of whatever race is being shoehorned into said industry. You should be where you are because you are qualified, NOT because your skin is a certain color. Get there organically. We are gonna end up with a bunch of less than qualified standards in these industries just because a bunch of people have an inferiority complex about their skin color and cant exist without having to see their own race artificially inserted into various aspects of society instead of being able to be proud to see their own race justifiably dominating in any given industry and being there by being qualified. I thought race shouldn't matter anyway, wasn't that what people who are against racism are trying to say anyway? Why would artificially inserting a certain race into specific parts of society make these people who feel underrepresented solve anything? Wouldn't it be better for those people to earn their own spot in those underrepresented areas organically be the better way to better represent their race because they are the best one for the job/role/position? Just plugging x race in there to make these people feel better about themselves does nothing for their feelings of inferiority because you may be inserting someone underqualified. Then you have those people underperforming and you'll have those same people with the inferiority complex complaining about how the underqualified person is being oppressed because they arent the industry leaders, which they will just take as another example of racism. It's a pretty counterproductive way of dealing with the issue.

When they make movies about us the big blockbusters are about white people like dances with wolves or last of the Mohicans where the Indians were more like part of the set. And that was back in the 90s. Since then I don't think we've been given any real platform by the big companies. Even though there are a lot of brilliant people in the native community. Our tiny voice is drowned out by the cocophony or the larger community. Even when we protest and we have good reason to the voice of the almighty dollar overrules all (I'm looking at you Dakota access pipeline).

This shit is insane and is going too far. It’s not about people being upset over those specific films, it’s the very principle that they would censor/ban ANY form of entertainment at all. It’s a slippery slope that could lead to the media and powerful figures altering what we see and hear. It IS revisionist history. How can you not see how dangerous this can be?

  • 3:18 - I can understand being upset at her for not googling/researching, but aside from googling it, i actually RARELY see anything EXCEPT focus on african americans. On ISworlds, Reddit, Google News, Facebook, and a handful of other sites, I see nothing about other groups, as those get drowned out. I think it is HORRIBLE to simply CANCEL her from everything, because she was ignorant - she was merely asking a question and was confused. Use this as a TEACHING EXPERIENCE. If an employee of yours doesn't know of other efforts and have questions, others likely do too but are AFRAID to ask. Now... what you're teaching is anybody who doesn't just go with it, and doesn't ask so they can understand, is awful and deserves to be shunned. This SHUTS DOWN communication and flow of information. You're ACTUALLY hurting the movements you say you support, by sending the message that anybody who doesn't "understand" is simply awful. They could easily justr lack the knowledge to fully understand... because... THEY AREN'T PART OF THE GROUP BEING VICTIMIZED. You hired somebody not part of the african community, and has had a very privileged life, and then are mad she doesn't understand, acknowledges she's privileged and wants to understand? What the fuck do you want? What did you expect? She has little experience with this. Most people don't. They just don't understand, and that's not their fault. If they WILLFULLY decide not to learn or understand, then sure, but simply not having the knowledge? Way to destroy the free exchange of knowledge that could help support these groups, and now make people afraid to ask questions and make statements that "could" be wrong.

She was 100% convinced that there was no problem with the depiction of slavery in the movie, even going so far as to call it accurate. I really could not convince her on why it was not accurate, including the coded KKK scene. I hope they release a round table of experts or people analyzing the work to go with the movie or recommend it after on these platforms, because I don’t think people understand how to critically view such a popular film, as if all its awards mean it was okay.

  • Pertaining to the movies and shows, I think its important to show every side of the film industry for educational purposes and do exactly what they are doing have an asterisk saying not an accurate depiction of the times. Or entirely fictional. I dont think one thing should be surpressed. Who really knows if gone with the wind was a story that was true, of course not for every single slave at all because there are stories that I have learned of their hardships or plays that also talk about them, but we dont know every single story of slaves either. Definitely having a black history section making sure it's accurate to what they went through is best. Not that any film will be the reality filmed but an idea of it.

  • As an election official of many years, I cringe every time there are problems with voting. But I'm also driven insane by the lack of knowledge people have about who is in charge at what levels, and how easily the incompetent or hyperpartisan try to pass the buck. In Democrat-run Houston, a Democrat county clerk eliminated large numbers of prior neighborhood polling locations, demanded equal numbers of voting machines for each party at each location despite the vastly different political makeup of each area, caused people to be waiting until after midnight to vote, and still she found a way to point fingers at Republicans for failures in the Democrat primary this spring. I tell everyone to go work an election or two and then talk about how complicated these issues are.

    • warmccl you are as important. When you hear someone saying that it’s just because they’re ignorant and shouldn’t represent all of us. Everyone deserves equality, usually when black people say that “it’s our time” is because they believe no one cares about us except us and other races also think the same way in regards to our “stereotypes”. For example, I worked at a Chinese restaurant and although I never personally felt discriminated from them because they got to know me eventually, it didn’t stop them from thinking black customers weren’t going to pay and that they didn’t deserve good customer service. I’ve went to Korean stores and had them follow me around? I’ve had Hispanic people feel the need to call me the n-word and when Dominicans are literally black themselves, will deny and shit on anyone who says it because apparently being black is soooo terrible. This doesn’t stop me from thinking the violence against Asian people in regards to the Coronavirus is wrong or Trump building a literal wall and then throwing innocent kids from South America in a place that looks worse than jail and denying them medicine is okay? But yes, it’s hard for some people to fight for others that feel like they aren’t on your side.

  • My thoughts are this no longer a country that supports free speech, if someone can be erased from all platforms for saying something we don't like where is the line. Pretty soon anyone who doesn't agree with the group thinks politics will be erased from the public eye everyone has to remember when. We do this to people you don't like it will eventually happen to people you do like and then you keep that in mind. Once we let the mob decided what's allowed freedom is erased. That's why we let people say stupid things

  • I think what these streaming services are doing is great but it shouldn’t just be like look at all these black movies. Black made and predominantly black cast movies should be suggested to you. You get them if you watch them but if I don’t go search for it you won’t see them and that’s not okey

  • Are they really mixing entertainment media and actual real arrests in the US? How is this even legal? We had a staged one in my country, but putting cameras in real situations seems insane to me on so many levels... Pls someone explain?

  • I watched "The Help" recently, found it very emotional, I even cried. Did I find it a representation of slavery and educational, no. It was more about gossip than anything else.

  • Can we talk about gerrymandering and the electoral college?! Voting needs to be changed dramatically. There are extremely problematic systems in place.

  • Hey Phil, this has been coming for a while now, but just wanted to say I appreciate how your tone has changed re Trump since the beginning of his presidency. I understood that in 2016 you wanted to be even handed and give both sides a fair shake. Given how the Trump presidency has played out though, I'm glad to see you repeatedly letting us behind the curtain to see your own shock and dismay at his actions. It's appreciated, and it helps me see you as more of a person and less as the typical "both sides are equal" kind of journalism that we see so often today.
