If you had that amount in cash, how comfortable would you feel about sticking it in an envelope and mailing it back to yourself by USPS? I've done absentee voting once before when I knew I'd be out of state on election day, but I wouldn't do it again if I had a choice otherwise.

But most people will not understand and hear true muslims because most people do not understand that terrorists are terrorists, they are not one of us, they are not muslims. If you ask any muslim person they will tell you that they are the spawns of Satan. We hate them more than you do because they taint and destroy everything we consider holy, such as human life.

  • My kids are doing "distance learning" here at our house, but the lack of computer knowledge both by the kids and the teachers paired with the lack of support some of the kids in their classes get at home has made it a shit show. My oldest is a second grader with mild asperguer's and has trouble focusing on tasks that require more than one step. It was set up in his IEP that this would be a goal for him to work on this year. To stay on task with only one two reminders per hour. Which now that we are distance learning means his mom or I have to be standing near him to redirect him every few minutes because it is almost impossible for him to watch his teacher on a computer screen along with 20 other kids while also trying to learn place value math while also learning to type on a computer and navagate a google classroom and convert files and create text boxes and, and, and.... but the crazy part is only about half of the the kids in his class have a parent who can do that for them. The others are left to have the teacher who is still learning how to do this herself try to explain it through a zoom call to an 8 year old. All of this is going on in front of all the other kids snd parents watching live. Not to mention the fact that his teacher is teaching at the school site snd has had days where the internet crashes because the entire district is on a shared server its a shit show. Kids were meant to be in school because it is a controlled environment where you can eliminate most distractions and teach in whatever way you are most comfortable. Not this, never this.

  • I am an ELL teacher and just today fielded emails about students not having access to the internet. The districts are facing budgeting cuts so the wifi hotspots we are providing we can no longer provide because they were being over used and therefore became too expensive, now we have students at square one. Meanwhile I have a friend who paid for a private tutor to do learning pods for the students and put this teacher on full retainer in addition to accessing online learning. Her kids have a mini classroom in the basement. These two families are in the same county. I would say this isn't so much a class divide as the Mariana Trench. As a teacher, I find these things to be so hard to see because I know how it effects the kids and there really aren't enough resources out there for them to access their learning, and the widens the divide even more, meanwhile during covid, there are families who are using this to be a spring board for their kids to get the best they can afford. I can't fault them for wanting the best for their kids, but likewise, I wish there were more chances for kids to access their learning on a more equal playing field.

Why are you asking, Phil? It should be painfully obvious that if we bend to terrorism and/or hurt feelings, we will lose our free society. These cartoons are only the tip of the iceberg. Surely I don't have to tell you how rampant cancel culture, driven by over-sensitivity and possessed of a reckless disregard for freedom of speech, is damaging our country.

At work one day she told me only 9 of her students had registered for her online classroom a week before the first day of school. 9 out of 20 kids! While the county is providing free laptops to families in need to help with online learning. Some families can't afford wifi, or just aren't tech savvy. I just hope that today she had more than 9 students show up for class.

That alone should be reason not to poste those caricatures. Should someone get killed for posting those caricatures? No. Is it still wrong to poste them? Yes. Posting them, just because you can, or to demonstrate freedom of speech, shows an extreme lack of empathy.

They have to go with a different provider. I had a friend (in college in Stephenville, TX) that didn’t have internet in her apartment because it was only this specific provider and while charter was giving free internet at first, the other was not. She had to come to my house or use the Starbucks WiFi. The schools in WA are providing iPads, just picked one up for my son on Wednesday. I believe they’re doing other things to assist people without WiFi.

  • What I don't understand is why these school districts don't utilize the free lunch program to subsidize internet service for their students. My children have always been homeschooled through an online charter school. Since it's an online public charter school, they collect household income information to determine if students are eligible for the free lunch program. Obviously online schools don't have cafeterias so what they do is provide them with low cost internet service through a few internet providers. My family is above the poverty line so I've never experienced this process but from what I've heard from other parents is that high speed internet can be less than $10.00 through this program. They also receive free laptops through this as well. Why can't ALL public schools offer this? Certainly that imbecile Betsy Devos can figure out how to accomplish something so simple.

If it is blasphemous for the Islamic religion, I think it’s incredibly disrespectful to have those images reprinted, and not necessary for the retelling of history. I, personally, think it’s like you’re choosing not to include the names of the people who commit crimes. I think they’re doing it for attention now, and to draw in readers. Did those people deserve to die? Absolutely not. But does that change the fact that what they did was disrespectful, no, nor do I think that reprinting the images has any positive impact

  • I think that was a wonderful story about those girls. However I am shocked that school aged kids going to a local fast food restaurant for WiFi sparked a child services check. These kids are not 5. They are perfectly capable of walking to a local shop with free WiFi. I would walk to the library when I was in elementary school for projects when needed. And of course that was before the internet was really a thing. I would also walk with friends when I was in 3rd grade to the local grocery store or the local fast food restaurant for snacks and we were always alone. And I wasn’t in some rural location either. I was in Seattle at the time. I am glad their story was brought to the attention of others simply for the housing situation they were in and that their family needed to have stable housing. However I think it went viral for the wrong reasons. I don’t think it is horrible if you have to go to a local shop for free WiFi. I also don’t think school aged children are in danger if they are walking to a shop by themselves. Was I the only one that thought that was odd? Was I the only one that would walk to public shops like that when I was a kid? Does anyone remember when the internet first became an acceptable source for citation in school and we had a paper due (90’s)? The internet wasn’t as common back then especially in houses. We would always go to coffee shops or bookstores or the library for access.

  • 2:29 Sorry Phil but I'd hardly call an antisemitism-fueled siege/hostage crisis in a supermarket (which killed 4 of the 5 others during the aftermath) simply 'shootouts with police'. Coulibaly (the terrorist there) wasn't even at the Charlie Hebdo attack, he tried to use Jewish hostages to assure the freedom of the Kouachi brothers (who attacked Charlie Hebdo), claiming he targeted Jews to 'defend Muslims, including Palestinians' but was later recorded as saying it was 'revenge for the Syrian government action and against the Western coalition actions in Mali, Iraq, and Afghanistan.' I appreciate that you have to summarise events, but when 4 out of the 5 killed after the Charlie Hebdo attack were from one antisemitic event, summarising it by the 1 policeman killed during a shootout makes it seem like the 4 Jews killed for being Jews have less value than the 1 policeman.

I'm currently working with people from my home school district to try and spread information about anti-racism efforts in schools there and make meaningful change, and a part of that is trying to create tutoring programs for the most at-risk students with parents who can't pay for tutoring or childcare. Any volunteer efforts of that kind are really, really necessary as the opportunity gap between the students is guaranteed to grow this year. So if anyone is in a position to volunteer to tutor or do childcare for free and out of the goodness of your hearts, or find programs that do so and lift them up, please do! My district is on a hybrid model that requires daily engagement from the kids. When those kids are home on their "off" days, they don't log into school. Some don't have internet, some work two jobs now that their schedules are "more flexible" so that their families do not end up on the street. Others take care of relatives. How can a school educate its students and uphold Free Appropriate Public Education (FAPE) when a required service to achieve it is behind a paywall? How can our students learn when they are being thrust into the working class so that their families don't end up homeless? How can I be forced to hold expectations of classwork and attendance when a significant population of my students does not meet the base requirements for Maslow's Hierarchy?

  • The Charlie Hebdo thing I have mixed feelings on. While I’m obvs against censorship and for the right to criticize and against violence as a response to satire, I still feel that if you’re going to satirize or criticize something that is important to people (an institution, a symbol, a holy icon, etc.) you’d better have something to really say. CH often just doesn’t. Instead they trot out tired old racist and anti-religious stereotypes and call it comedy. Mocking people’s beliefs or people for their beliefs is not satire, it’s just bullying, especially if they’re not hurting others.

    • @gzuz ru They shouldn't have to fear for their life, obviously, but there's still no reason for them to be doing something as wholeheartedly and intentionally offensive as what they're doing.

    • But even if they dont have anything to say, they should still be able to publish anything they want, without fearing for their life...

  • I comment frequently since these do actually get read. As far as school internet & what's going on in different place, I have been happy to volunteer for my school. As an IT student at Dona Ana Community College, I've been able to help pass out brand new iPad to fellow students. These have been purchased with CARE benefits to assist in student success. Students sign an agreement they are full time & must pass all classes in order to keep the iPad to use during their scholastic career or new career. Student-to-student mentoring has been discussed as a part of assistance provided when students call the help hotline included with the device. A keyboard, mask, ream of paper, iPencil, & school decal are included. As an IT student, I look forward to helping others as I have always enjoyed the exchange in a training environment at whatever job I'm in. And continuing education even outside of the classroom to become a certified Apple Teacher where there's potential to host classes for teachers as well. Most colleges & universities have it more together. Hopefully, with increased coverage, elementary schools can do better or be just as great. From what I've heard, elementary & high school students are having extreme differences in opportunity for success. Some are terrible while others have been fantastic. In education all around, more must be done.

  • "these cartoons now belong to history and history can not be erased" ... No, but history is most definitely a lie written by the victors... Are you a liar Mr. Hebdo? history changes depending on who you ask... The fact that we do not share the same story is the direct proof as to why we repeat the same past mistakes...

  • Shit like this (the girls who were gonna be one homeless) is happening so much more right now because of widespread lockdowns that occurred for so many months. Not allowing people to go back to work was and still is a violation of our rights as Americans. Implement protective measures but fully reopen the fucking country so people can work and provide for their families

  • What does california being the tech "capital" (what an oxymoron) of the world have to do with individuals not having decent internet? That is a personal choice, and a choice of where u live. I know quite a few rich people live in areas that have crap internet, because it's not a priority for them. School level internet, like 30 mbps, can be bought in most urban areas in California for about 30-40$ per month. It is an essential service, but some people don't see it that way.
